Frontlines: The Case of The Hudson's Bay Building

This Frontlines session will engage relevant experts in critical dialogue about the socio-political and historical context of the significant Hudson Bay Building, using this conversation as a basis for addressing challenges and opportunities for many Winnipeg buildings with uncertain futures.

Leah Gazan has been the NDP Member of Parliament for Winnipeg Centre since 2019. She is currently the NDP Critic for Children, Families, and Social Development, as well as the Critic for Women and Gender Equality and Deputy Critic for Housing. Gazan is a member of Wood Mountain Lakota Nation, located in Saskatchewan, Treaty 4 territory. Prior to being elected to parliament, Gazan was a prominent leader during Idle No More, articulating the movement to the Winnipeg public. Gazan also co-founded the #WeCare campaign aimed at building public will to end violence against Indigenous women and girls.

Murray Peterson, City of Winnipeg Historian, has been working for the City of Winnipeg since 1987 as its chief researcher. In this capacity, he has been authoring histories of thousands of buildings, at first on a manual typewriter! His work includes writing interpretive plaques, consulting with historians around the world and establishing, maintaining and sharing a large collection of information on thousands of structures throughout the city. He has five grandsons which keeps him pretty busy!

Colin Neufeld (B.E.D., M.Arch, MAA, RAIC) is an architect and partner at 5468796 Architecture. He has completed extensive work on multi-family housing, mixed use, and most of the firm’s heritage revitalization projects, including: The Avenue on Portage and its main floor tenant, Manitoba Start; The Porter Building [Winnipeg Heritage Award]; Warehouse 1885 on Princess; Sterling Building on Portage; 200 Portage renovation; and Bloc_10 [RAIC Award of Excellence for Innovation; Architectural Review Emerging Architecture Award; Governor General’s Medal in Architecture].His most recent work includes the adaptive reuse and redesign of the James Avenue Pumping Station [Canadian Architect Award], and mixed use development, 90 Alexander [Canadian Architect Award].
