SfMB 2021 YEAR IN REVIEW
December 30, 2021
The world continues to change at an unprecedented pace. Upheaval and uncertainty have tipped over the apple cart of the status quo. Storefront is evolving to meet the challenges. We recognize that design professionals are in a unique position to turn tragedy into opportunity.
As advocates for design excellence, Storefront’s contributions have never been more critical. Progressive design will change our communities for the better, with spaces that are sustainable, safe, equitable, bold, and inspiring.
With this formidable responsibility in mind, 2021 has been a busy year at Storefront MB!
__________
WE ARE 10!
Storefront Manitoba was registered as a non-profit in 2011 to help fill a void by celebrating architecture and urbanism in Manitoba.
CAFE NANO ON THE RIVER TRAIL
We brought hot chocolate to the river trail, sharing our Winter Map of river trail installations, and engaging in conversations about city building. Our river systems have carried people and goods for thousands of years, what better place to carry our ideas about the future of sustainability. Café Nano returns in early 2022.
NEW WEBSITE
The new website showcases our extensive programming, introduces you to the Storefront Board of Directors, and helps you to stay up to date with future events and announcements.
DIGITAL ON THE BOARDS
This 12-week conversation series brought together the best design minds in Manitoba and beyond to discuss the challenges and opportunities in professional practice posed by current global tumult.
LITTLE RED LIBRARY FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN
On Monday, May 10, the Little Red Library, located at the Hugo Dock river access point, was severely damaged due to arson. We were deeply moved by the outpouring of kind messages and financial support to help with repairs. After extensive repairs, the Little Red Library will soon return home! Stay tuned for an announcement on social media.
Storefront’s popular annual fundraiser, Tablefor1200More was cancelled due to pandemic restrictions, so TableTo1200 was born. The donation campaign raised $22,355 for Harvest Manitoba to feed 2,200 individuals across Manitoba. We've started planning for TableFor1200More 2022 and can't wait to celebrate with you!
The curated SfMB Playlist is a monthly thematic list of films, podcasts, and other resources that aim to entertain, inspire, enrich, and advance critical discussion. December's playlist is on Celebration.
RETREE WINNIPEG
As part of Cool Gardens 2021, we launched a unique collaboration with 5468796 Architecture. retree Winnipeg is a collective call to action to plant more trees in the city. An educational campaign on social media was paired with a series of art installations around the city, and a tree kit giveaway.
BENCHmark PINAWA
In October, we unveiled a new BENCHmark installation in Pinawa by Berlin based designers Sophie + Hans. Reflection Station is made up of four stations that reflect the natural areas of the Ironwood Trail while simultaneously revealing the many modes of movement along the trail. Benchmark is an ongoing partnership with Winnipeg Trails.
4TWO DESIGN MERCHANDISE COLLABORATION
Storefront just launched a merchandise collaboration with Jonato Dalayoan of 4two Design Inc. Get your very own stylish tote and long sleeved tee, now available for purchase on our website.
__________
We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of our funders, partners, volunteers, and participants for making the last ten years a success. You are the backbone of our quest to celebrate and improve the built environment in Manitoba.
We are looking forward to a compelling roster of projects in 2022 as health measures allow, including a publication and exhibit on David Penner, a Frontlines series on the future of the Hudson’s Bay building, and a grand Table for 1200 this coming Spring.
From all of us here at Storefront Manitoba, we wish you and all of your loved ones all the best in 2022!
