Curry Building, 245 Portage Avenue
April 28, 7-10pm
Featuring launch and sale of Unstacking the Deck: A Game of Change, a double deck of playing cards celebrating early women architects and designers who studied and worked in Manitoba: from the first female UM B.Arch graduate in 1932, to women who forged careers in the 1960-70s.
Created by Lisa Landrum, University of Manitoba, Faculty of Architecture, in research collaboration with Marieke Gruwel and the Winnipeg Architecture Foundation, and FAUM students. Featuring cover art by Jackie Traverse.
Together with celebrating women in architecture, Unstacking the Deck calls for further action on inclusion and intersectional justice: beyond binaries (Jack♥), beyond borders (King♥), and toward Indigenous sovereignty (Queen♥).
The launch includes displays by Faculty of Architecture student groups: JAR Opener (a student-led podcast on issues of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in the field of design); SAS Beyond Borders (international representatives of the Student Architectural Society); and IDPSA (the Indigenous Design and Planning Students Association). Warehouse journals will also be for available for sale.
Supported by the University of Manitoba Creative Works Grants Program, the Faculty of Architecture Partners Program and Endowment Fund, the Manitoba Association of Architects, and BEA-Prairies.
This event is free and open to the public.
